Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (IATA: SRQ) is located within three jurisdictions: Sarasota County, the city limits of Sarasota, and Manatee Counties, in the United States state of Florida.

It is situated three miles to the north of Downtown Sarasota and six miles to the south of Bradenton, and it is under the administration of the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority.

According to the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017-2021, the airport is considered a "small hub" because it is responsible for a small percentage of all passenger enplanements in the United States.

Currently, it has two runways – the first runway (4/22) is 1,527m (5,009ft) long, and the second runway (14/32) is 2,896m (9,500ft) long. The airport comprises two separate terminals and a total of thirteen gates.

History of Sarasota Bradenton International Airport

Before the Sarasota Bradenton Airport construction, both Bradenton and Sarasota had their very own airports, with Bradenton operating the Bradenton Airport and Sarasota operating Lowe Field.

The Bradenton Airport was created between 1935 and 1937, but it was closed down during World War 2 for reasons that are not fully understood. On January 12, 1929, Lowe Field would be dedicated, although it wouldn't be open to the public until March 12.

Sarasota's first municipal airport will be developed on 160 acres (0.65 km2) north of Fruitville Road and west of Oriente Avenue (now Beneva Road).

On August 4, 1937, National Airlines was scheduled to begin operating flights out of the airstrip.

Because the landing strip frequently became too wet to use for landing, flights were often postponed that year. As a result, National Airlines left Sarasota later that year when the city could not pay for the construction of concrete runways.

The Civil Air Patrol had its base of operations at Lowe Field during World War II. After the war, most of the civilian operations that had been taking place at Lowe Field moved to the Sarasota-Bradenton Airport. However, the airport continued to be used for crop dusters, student pilots, and mosquito control programs.

Ultimately, the airport would remain open until 1961, when its owner would sell the land. Because of Lowe Field's poor state and limited capacity, it was investigated as a possible successor.

1939 marked the beginning of the construction of the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. The following year, with support from the CCC and the WPA, it was opened at the cost of one million dollars. The Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority was established in May 1941.

SRQ was known as R.S. in the 1940s. The International Air Transport Association issued three-character codes in 1948 to meet rising demand.

The airport's original code, "SSO," was sometimes confused with the global distress signal SOS. "Q" was chosen to complete SRQ.

There is a larger than 42 percent chance of precipitation falling on any given day during the wetter season, which begins on June 5 and continues until September 27. August is the wettest, with an average of 20.5 days that get at least 0.04 inches of precipitation.

The duration of the dry season is 8.3 months, beginning on September 27 and ending on June 5. November is the month that has the fewest number of days that are characterized as wet. August is the month that has an average of 20.5 days of rain on its own, making it the wettest month in Sarasota.
